Getting over an addiction of any kind is never an easy task. It requires a lot of will power, discipline, the right support system and of course, something that propels or motivates you to keep at it. Same can be said about saving which is why we definitely celebrate this customer who decided to share his story with us, though anonymous. We hope that this inspires you.

It all started in November 2019 when a friend shared his Backup Cash referral link with me. He wanted me to sign up and asked that I put at least N500 to activate the account.

Remi (not real name) is not someone that I consider to be financially responsible. So, I was curious as to why he was so interested in getting me to sign up to a savings product. In the course of asking, I found out that Backup Cash was running a 21day challenge with the sum of N200,000 as the prize money.

December was just around the corner. Having additional N200,000 will go a long way to beef up my flex for the season. However, I was running low on cash due to some financial problems that I ran into earlier in the year. So, I wasn’t even sure how to come up with the savings.

A few days later, I saw the video of Frank Donga and the mama put on my Instagram explore page and for some reason, I could relate. I have been trying to stop drinking for quite some time as my doctor expressed some concern. As a result, I had started reducing the bottles gradually but was still at it every now and again.

I decided to cut down more and instead activate a steady save of N500 daily. Just as the challenge was about to come to an end, I decided to lock a lump sum since I joined the challenge late. At this point, I had just a little money left in my account. There was an upfront interest from Backup Cash but I did not want to take that out hoping it will increase my chances of winning.

The challenge ended so quickly, winners were announced and I didn’t win. My girlfriend who knew what I was doing, insisted that I continue the savings. She pointed out how I had changed over the past few days and felt that if I continue with this, I could finally get over this. Again, it was important that I did because of my health.

With that in mind, I requested to stop my daily savings and opted for weekly savings. To cut the story short, In 6months, my alcohol intake had reduced drastically. Then the whole pandemic drama and the fear of not knowing where the next money will come from, made me keep at my savings while being mindful of how I spend.

Today, I have become a social drinker. I am not 100% there yet but I can say that I have made tremendous progress. It’s been almost a year since I started this journey and when I saw the call for inspiring savings stories, my girlfriend asked me to send this in.

I am glad that my friend introduced me to Backup Cash.
